Time for Washington's NFL Franchise to Get a New Name

The name of Washington's major league football team is a slur against Native Americans. Over the past few years, and especially in the last couple months, mascots that promote stereotypes have been retired. The Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves no longer use caricatures of Native Americans as logos. Meanwhile, Washington's NBA franchise changed its name from the Bullets to the Wizards to remove the violent context of the original name. If that team can change its name, so can D.C.'s football franchise.

Here are some suggestions for a new name:
* Soldiers
* Griffins
* Redtails (to honor the legendary African-American pilots from World War II)
* Warriors (then they can revive the spear logo from some years back)
* Americans (you already have the Nationals baseball team, and Houston has the Texans)
* Red Dragons
* Federals
* Sentinels
* Warlocks

Many colleges have retired their Native American mascots and taken new ones. It's time for Washington's football team to do the same.
