The Right of Way to our Homes

The Portmore Citizens Advisory Council, the Portmore Joint Citizens Association, the Greater Portmore Joint Citizens Association, the All Hellshire Leadership Council, along with residents of the municipality of Portmore in St. Catherine hereby petition The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, Prime Minister of Jamaica, to redress the unjust situation facing us as a result of the conversion of the Portmore Causeway to a toll road.
1.  A revision of the toll charges on the Portmore causeway to:
-$30 for class one vehicles (private)
-$70 for class two vehicles (commercial)
2.  Implementation of a 24-month moratorium on any increase to the toll rate.
3.  The widening of the Mandela Highway to six lanes to facilitate the additional traffic from the Bushy Park/Spanish Town leg of Highway 2000.
4.  The removal of the roundabout leading out of Portmore onto the Mandela Highway, which is a cause for traffic bottleneck during peak hours.
5.   The repair of the Rio Cobre River Bridge, which exits Portmore traffic onto the Mandela Highway.
6.   The inclusion of a soft shoulder on the Dyke Road
7.   The widening of Marcus Garvey Drive to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic from the Portmore toll road.
8.   The immediate relocation of the fisher folks who operated along the Portmore Causeway before the opening of the toll road, which has negatively impacted their livelihood.
