Protest Racist Bake Sale Gone Too Far!
The Campus Republicans student group at UC Berkeley has chosen a very controversial way to contest affirmative action: a bake sale with prices based on race.
The students believe that this "satirical stunt" will help people see how affirmative action might cause unfair admission practices, adding the tag line "If you don't come, you are racist!" But where do we draw the line between "satire" and outright disrespect?
According to Facebook user Keith Africano "If this bake sale was really going to be comparable to affirmative action, the flour, oven, and all baking materials were stolen from the people that are required to pay the lowest prices... goods from all prior bake sales were made for free by the minorities while white students reaped all the profits."
The bake sale is set to take place while the legislative bill, SB 185, that deals will the topic of affirmative action goes under review. Help take a stand against racism in 2011!
Dear Governor Jerry Brown,
Minorities have been historically discriminated against in the United States for centuries. This country has an embarrassing history of racism that must not be ignored.
The bill SB 185, which will be under review today, would allow race, gender, ethnicity, and national origin, along with other relevant factors to be considered in undergraduate and graduate admissions.
The numbers of underprivileged minorities in California universities are small and are dwindling every day. This bill would be a way to combat the diversity and discrimination minorities have been forced to face all their lives. I urge you to give SB 185 a serious look and help some of the downtrodden get back up.
