Trump Wants to Strip Naturalized Americans of Their Citizenship, Including the Possible Next Mayor of New York City

You might think that after becoming a U.S. citizen, you're set. Done. Golden. A citizen! You've finally completed the journey to secure an ongoing future in the U.S. But under the Trump administration, that's no longer true. Now, Trump is trying to find excuses to revoke citizenship from people who went through the naturalization process.

By going after citizenship, Trump is crossing a new and terrifying line in the sand. We must push back and demand that the Department of Justice reverse its new denaturalization policy!

Right now, around 25 million people are naturalized U.S. citizens. That's larger than the entire population of New York State. And now, this whole community will be under a microscope.

Trump's Department of Justice (DOJ) just released a memo that not only allows the government to denaturalize U.S. citizens who were born overseas. It also demands that they prioritize finding naturalized citizens to target, based on loose and vague criteria that can include incomplete application information - or their current political views.

For example, Trump and his cronies are now suggesting that they may revoke the citizenship of Zohran Mamdani, the current frontrunner for mayor of New York City. Mamdani won the Democratic primary election to become the party's official candidate in June 2025 - and Trump was immediately incensed.

His administration claims they could strip him of citizenship for supposedly supporting "terrorist" causes. What they really mean is that he has supported human rights overseas, especially in Gaza, and opposed the use of ICE to terrorize and disappear immigrants. Voicing his political dissent and support for human rights is not illegal. Yet we all know, under the Trump administration, having political views that oppose the administration's is risky.

As Mamdani summarized: "The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported. Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city."

Luckily, some lawmakers and politicians are standing up for Mamdani and other naturalized citizens, like Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut. He called the Trump administration's new threats "racist bullshit."

The Justice Department's memo is putting very real people - U.S. citizens - in very real danger. Under this new policy, those targeted for denaturalization might not even be able to have an attorney to help them fight this!

Trump's mission to strip naturalized Americans of their citizenship is dangerous and a serious escalation compared to anything we've seen so far. The only way to get the Department of Justice to reverse its new mission is to show that we are watching. Sign the petition to demand the Department of Justice abandon its plans to denaturalize citizens!
