We Want Action: Support Filibuster Reform

Filibusters are the procedure the minority party the Senate uses to block a majority-favored bill. It used to be that waging a filibuster was a major effort, causing senators to debate on the floor of Congress all day and straight through the night -- sometimes for days on end. But these days, filibusters don't work that way.

In fact, in the 1960s, only 8% of all bills were blocked by a filibuster, but since 2006 that has ballooned to more than 70%. Even the bill to provide health care to 9/11 first responders was blocked by a filibuster.

This has caused total gridlock in Congress.

Any day now, senators could vote on rule changes that would end the abuse of the filibuster. This reform would restore democracy and transparency to the filibuster process.
