Jack Smith spent years investigating Donald Trump. This week, he sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee and explained why.
Smith walked senators through the evidence his team relied on in bringing federal charges against Trump, including evidence concerning Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and obstruct the certification of the results. Trump denied wrongdoing, and the cases were ultimately dismissed without trials after he returned to office. Smith testified that he still stands behind his charging decisions and said he would have made the same decisions regardless of whether the person under investigation was a Republican or a Democrat.
And for that, he was attacked.
Sen. Eric Schmitt called Smith a "dirtbag" and accused him of perjury based on what Schmitt portrayed as evidence that Smith had secretly traveled to Atlanta. That accusation quickly unraveled: Smith had attended an Iowa Hawkeyes basketball game in Maryland, not an Atlanta Hawks game in Georgia.
Schmitt, an asshole, refused to apologize or correct himself, even though everyone there literally had just watch him **** up in real tome.
But Smith didn't back down.
He defended his work, stood by the evidence his team gathered, and said he would not be intimidated by threats of prosecution.
Whatever your political party, the principle should be simple: No president is above the law, and prosecutors should be able to follow the evidence without being threatened or intimidated for doing their jobs.
