Dog attacked by a man with a machete in her own backyard

Veterinarians are working to save the life of a dog viciously attacked by a man wielding a machete. It happened Tuesday night in Baltimore.
That dog is now in the critical care unit of a local animal hospital and the man accused of attacking her was arrested and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Eighteen-month-old shepherd/pit bull mix Akasha was playing in her own fenced-in yard on Wylie Street when police say a neighbor attacked her with a machete.
Nakitta McLean and her daughter were home when it happened.
"We hear our dog yelp really loud and we thought something was going on so she runs outside and there's a man in the back and I'm hearing my child scream, `Mommy, Mommy, this man is trying to kill my dog!'" McLean said.
She raced outside to see Levar Bailey, 32, holding what police describe as an 18- to 24-inch long machete.
"It was really long and bloody. You could barely see any metal on it. All you could see is blood and chunks," she said.
The McLeans say the man came through their yard holding the machete and came down the alley after the dog. At the end of the alley, he attacked Akasha with a machete.
"He yells obscenities at me and says my dog tried to bite his daughter. There's no child in the backyard. It was rainy yesterday," McLean said.
Police arrested Bailey a few doors down and tell WJZ he has a history of mental illness. The entire experience was upsetting to the McLean's children. Their other dog that escaped injury now hides in the house.
"We're considering moving," McLean said.
"If he did this to a dog, he could do this to a human. For him to be released from a mental hospital, clearly he has some problems and clearly he was released too early," said Jamon McLean.
(update) The dog that was attacked by a man with a machete has been released back to her family.
Officials with the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter said Akasha underwent surgery following the attack.
One of Akasha's eyes had to be removed and her muzzle was stitched. Repairs were done to one of her lungs, which collapsed because of a stab wound. Her right wrist was repaired and drains were installed in some of the wounds.

This man obviously needs to remain in a mental hospital. Help keep this dangerous person away from our pets and our children. If he were released again, his next victim may be a child.
We the undersigned would like to ask that you keep this dangerous man off the streets and away from our pets and children! We feel unsafe with such a person alowed to roam freely. If he is released again, he may attack another animal or even a child.
Please help keep our country safe by keeping people like him away.
Thank you for your time.
