Blind/VI Education Reform for Washington

Washington State lacks College institutions and educational programs to teach instructors and paraeducators how to work with blind students.

Consequently, Washington State lacks personnel to educate blind & visually impaired students and many students go without proper instruction in blind skills due to the shortage of teachers.

Many teachers who are available to teach lack blind skills  to keep up with advancing technology in the field.  Others are not able to teach blind students because they lack Braille certification.  These skills are not taught at state colleges in Washington; teachers in the state are not able to learn these skills and thus cannot pass them onto their students.

Washington State needs a College/University that teaches necessary skills of Braille and adaptive technology in addition to other blind skills in order to gain more personnel and educate those in the field, so all blind & visually impaired students in the state can be educated just as sighted students are educated.

Please sign this petition if you agree with these statements, so it can be sent to Olympia to start the process of getting a College or University to begin an education program for personnel teaching the blind & visually impaired.
