Better Food for the prison system

The prison systems in this country are over looked and wrongfully abused.  As a resident of Florida I can't imagine any kind of inhumane treatment of anyone.  Granted the people in PRISON are murderers and rapists, but they are treated better then those in JAIL.  Just because they violated a man-made law does not give the right to "Law abiding citizens" to deny them basic life supporting features... food and shelter.  The shelter is provided by a hard bed with scratchy sheets and all the worst you can imagine but that is jail/prison...  the food on the other hand is food I wouldn't even feed a dog.  The food is what needs to be changed.  If I was served Nutraloaf (something that looks like meatloaf but sounds like dog food)
We the undersigned are disgusted with the food quality that is being served in the prison system.  Understandable that they are law breakers but they are still humans no matter how inhumane their crime was. The people who are in JAIL as opposed to those in PRISON are more then likely not violent criminals.  Just because they made a mistake they are treated like they killed someone where someone who did kill someone gets more luxeries and privledges.

The food provided to the people who are incarcerated in JAIL is not considered food.  The USDA recommends that men should get between 3-4 ounces of grain, 2.5 - 3 cups of vegetables, 2 cups of fruit, 24 ounces of dairy, 5.5 - 6.5 ounces of protein in order to have a balanced meal.  The military even gives the soldiers MREs that provide 3000 calories to surfice the event they can not eat.    The food provided to prisoners barely meets either of those requirements.

The Nutraloaf that they serve resembles meatloaf but I would not in a million years eat it.  The food provided to the prisoners either forces the prisoner to starve to death or become greatly ill from eating it.  With the $17,000 dollars it costs each day to incarcerate a person the food should be better.  It doesn't have to be steak and lobster every night but it should be edible.  If the minimum of the USDA recommendations are met and it doesn't look like the food was walked on and rolled in the mud then people would be less angry in the jails because they wouldn't be hungry.  Hunger increases irritability and that can cause fights and other violent acts.

Thank you for taking the time to read this petition and when the next budget is voted on please make sure that it is figured into the budget for the food provided to prisoners both in PRISON and JAIL.
