Legalize Adoption of NK stateless children

Of the North Korean refugees who are hiding or have come through China, the majority are women and over 80 percent are trafficked or voluntarily marry Chinese men. Some of these women, however, leave their families for fear of being caught and sent back to North Korea or to escape abuse. Once the North Korean mothers leave, the Chinese fathers often find themselves struggling or unable to provide for their children, leaving these stateless children to be cared for by relatives or altogether abandoned. Stateless children lack documentation that prove their citizenship and allow them to receive education, work legally or have basic rights. These children are left with two options: find a way to survive in China but remain at high risk of exploitation or abuse, or escape to another country to seek resettlement or asylum, often a dangerous and costly journey.

In response, LiNK (or Liberty in North Korea) launched a campaign to raise nationwide support for H.R. 4986 and S. 3156, "The North Korean Refugee Adoption Act of 2010."

These two bills call on the Secretary of State to develop a strategy to develop a strategy for assisting stateless and orphaned North Korean children by facilitating the adoption of eligible children by wanting families in the United States.

We need YOUR voice to show Congress that their constituents care about orphaned and stateless North Korean children.

Please take a few minutes to fill out this petition and forward to your friends and family. The lives of thousands of children are on the line, and they desperately need your help.

Dear Member of Congress,

I ask that you support and vote YES on H.R. 4986 and S. 3156, The North Korean Refugee Adoption Act of 2010.

I am writing because I recently learned about the plight of up to 300,000 North Korea refugees hiding in China and their struggle to find freedom and safety. I was glad to hear that the US had passed legislation in 2004 to help protect and provide for these refugees if they come to America, but was very sad to hear that thousands of these children in China do not have protection or citizenship, making them stateless. I believe that the US has an opportunity to protect these children and am excited that a bill has been created that will provide an option for them to be adopted here in the US by families willing to accept them. I strongly support HR 4986, The North Korean Refugee Adoption Act of 2010, and ask that you vote for its passage when it comes up for a vote.

H.R. 4986 and S. 3156 will create a strategy to enable for the adoption of eligible stateless children who have been orphaned or abandoned, by wanting families in the U.S.  Please support this bill and help give these children a chance to enjoy the freedom and healthy life they deserve.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
