We, the people signing this petition, urge the Department of Transportation to build protected bicycle lanes on the streets of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Protected bike lanes corral cyclists into a designated area, which makes their cycling behavior more predictable. The result is safer streets for bicyclists, pedestrians, and car drivers. Additionally, as cycling becomes safer, more people will cycle. As more people cycle, cycling becomes safer. It is a virtuous circle, where cars and bicyclists learn to slow down, follow the rules, and respect one another and pedestrians.
Goal: To urge the Department of Transportation of the City of New York to build protected bicycle lanes on the streets of the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Why: Protected bike lanes corral cyclists into a designated area, which makes their cycling behavior more predictable. The result is safer streets for bicyclists, pedestrians, and car drivers.
