LEST WE FORGET--Remembering the Forgotten War

President Calvin Coolidge once said, "The nation which forgets its defenders will be itself forgotten."

This past 6/25, on the 58th anniversary of the Korean War, US House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rangel URGED AMERICA TO REMEMBER THE FORGOTTEN WAR.

This call seems timely as we are seeing glimmering rays of hope for peace on the Korean peninsula; the last remaining war from the Cold War era may finally come to a close.

To respectfully honor the valiant efforts of Korean War veterans, who risked their lives fighting against the spread of Communism on the Korean Peninsula (and to the rest of the world), let us commemorate the Korean War Armistice Day by displaying the flag at half-staff in remembrance and recognition of the Korean War veterans and a war that has yet to end.

More than 1000 Korean War veterans die each day! The least we could do is remember and recognize their sacrifices for securing the freedom we can even afford to take for granted.

Please help us reach our goal of collecting 1,000,000 signatures before Armistice Day, July 27; and Contact your Members of Congress to pass S1888/HR6363 aka Korean War Veterans Recognition Act.

Consider these facts:

  • 26 nations were involved in the War (was not just a civil war);
  • In three years US suffered 54,246 casualties and 8100 POWs (Vietnam War left 58,226 dead and 2000 missing over the course of sixteen years);
  • 30,000 US soldiers are still stationed in Korea; and
  • DMZ is considered one of "the most dangerous place on earth".

KOREA, A FORGOTTEN WAR
(By Cpl.Tom Lyons,U S Army, 2nd Inf.Div.)

Why have they forgotten?
Will some one let me know
A war fought through the summers
And through the winters snow

Will any one out there listen
To what we have to say?
While fighting in Korea
We lived from day to day

We were but young Americans
Sent off to fight that war
After it had ended
You heard of us no more

Many young Americans
Sacrificed their flesh and blood
While serving in Korea
They died while fighting in mud

Those veterans now lay
In sacred ground so hallow
Before this war was over
Many more GI's did follow

We were proud to serve our country
In that far off land
Why has our nation forgotten
We shall never understand

We the undersigned support S.1888/H.R.6363, aka Korean War Veterans Recognition Act of 2007/2008, a bill that will add National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, July 27, to the list of days on which the flag should especially be displayed.

At a time when more than 1000 Korean War veterans are dying each day, displaying the flag on Korean War Armistice Day will ensure that we respectfully honor and pay tribute to the tremendous courage demonstrated by the men and women who served in the Korean War before it is too late. The Korean War Veterans have paid dearly to preserve the freedoms we enjoy; yet they only ask of us to remember them.

Commemorating Armistice Day will also help us remember the Forgotten War that has yet to end.  As President Eisenhower had justly underscored in 1954, let us re-consecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.
Let us hope that many veterans will live to see the day the Korean War officially ends.

We urge you to pass S.1888/H.R.6363.
Thank you for your support.
