The undersigned urge you to act decisively to end field burning in the Willamette Valley.
The medical evidence is overwhelming -- fine particulates entrained in field burning smoke constitute an extreme danger to public health. This smoke infiltrates our common airshed and penetrates deep into the lungs. It causes acute and long-term health problems for vulnerable people -- including those with existing pulmonary and cardiovascular disease, the elderly, and young children.
Field burning was ended in Washington by executive action and in Idaho by court order. Yet it continues in Oregon, because state officials here -- including the Environmental Quality Commission, the Department of Environmental Quality, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and the State Legislature -- refuse to act.
This is unacceptable. We urge you to stand up for the health of residents in the Willamette Valley.
