Many Australians, the our friends overseas, are still understandably haunted by the images captured by Animals Australia investigators of Australian cattle being brutalised in Indonesian abattoirs. Shock and disbelief accompanied the Gillard government's decision to reopen the trade to Indonesia. Few Australians were comforted by promises of a new system that would 'assure' the protection of Australian cattle.
New footage from Indonesia that aired on ABC television Feb 28th 2012 has revealed our fears were well-founded. An Indonesian investigator engaged by Animals Australia documented the treatment of cattle in slaughterhouses over three nights and revealed that the brutal treatment of cattle.
It's time to put a stop to this torture and we seek your help with this petition to do just that!
We, the undersigned, are appalled to see new footage revealing yet more cruelty in the live export trade.
Overwhelmingly Australians want live export to end and were appalled when the trade to Indonesia was reopened. The Gillard government promised us that new regulations would ensure that cattle would no longer be subjected to cruel treatment.
Already we know that this isn't the case. Once again we are seeing the most appalling evidence emerging from Indonesia of cattle being brutalised. The images from Indonesia of animals being killed whilst fully conscious reflect a brutal practice that will never be accepted by the Australian public.
It's time for the government to stop supporting an industry that has demonstrated time and time again that it cannot be trusted. We urge you to represent the views and demand that the government acts to end live export.
