Ban Toxic Chemicals in Furniture That Harm Children

A new study just published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that flame retardants commonly used in household items are linked to a 4.5 point I.Q. drop and hyperactivity in five-year-old children whose mothers were exposed to the substances during pregnancy and when they were babies.

This research builds on other peer-reviews studies that highlight the dangers of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, a.k.a. PDBEs. PDBEs are found in car seats, couches and carpets, among many other common items.

PDBEs are no longer widely used in new goods marketed to mothers and children, but items containing the substance remain in homes and offices, and they are being replaced with new chemicals without testing to ensure better safety.

Please sign the petition to urge Environment Canada to ban PDBEs in items pregnant women and children are exposed to, and increase product testing to ensure that new chemicals are safe for pregnant mothers and children!

As you may know, a new study just published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that flame retardants commonly used in household items are linked to a 4.5 point I.Q. drop and hyperactivity in five-year-old children whose mothers were exposed to the substances during pregnancy and when they were babies.

This research builds on other peer-reviews studies that highlight the dangers of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, a.k.a. PDBEs. PDBEs are found in car seats, couches and carpets, among many other common items.

While we understand PDBEs are no longer widely used in new goods marketed to mothers and children, items containing the substance remain in homes and offices, and they are being replaced with new chemicals without testing to ensure better safety.

We respectfully urge you to ban PDBEs in items pregnant women and children are exposed to, and increase product testing to ensure that new chemicals are safe for pregnant mothers and children. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
