This petition is to support the proposition of a local ordinance that would ban the retail sale of dogs and cats in New Braunfels, TX.
Responsible breeders would never place their animals in retail locations. Unfortunately, the majority of dogs and cats that are sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are large scale breeding facilities that pump out as many animals as possible with little consideration to the welfare of both the puppies/kittens and the parents of these animals. These animals are often crowded into tiny cages, not provided with proper food and water, denied veterinary care, un-socialized, and tend to be inbred causing many health and behavioral problems. It is estimated that 2-4 million dogs are born in puppy mills each year.
This ordinance would also strongly encourage pet stores to work with local humane societies and rescue organizations to work towards adopting out homeless pets.
The Austin, TX city council approved ordinance 201007-090 to prohibit such sales. We want such an ordinance in New Braunfels.
Dear City Council,
The Austin, Texas, City Council approved ordinance 20100729-090 to prohibit retail sales of dogs and cats at pet stores, a measure that will help crack down on inhumane puppy mills. The Austin Animal Advisory Commission unanimously recommended that the City Council pass such a prohibition.
The petitioners and residents of the City of New Braunfels, TX request that the New Braunfels City Council take action to approve the same ordinance on behalf of New Braunfels.
