Allow humane point of care tests for rabies

Petition to the House of Commons
Whereas:
Rabies is a deadly zoonotic virus that requires a humane, antemortem, point of care test that does not involve killing animals for the test.
Currently, while several humane, point of care antemortem tests are permitted for humans, only post mortem tests involving brain dissection are permitted for animals.
An antemortem rabies test for animals would allow immigrants to bring their animal companions. Currently dogs are banned from many countries, due to rabies concerns. This prevents refugees from bringing their furry family members into Canada.
An antemortem rabies test would free up animal shelter space by reducing quarantine times.
Thousands of animals are killed every year for rabies testing, but only a fraction of these animals had rabies. More animals are killed for the test than die of rabies. An antemortem rabies test would eliminate unnecessary euthanasia.
We, the undersigned, Would like Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Environment Canada to allow antemortem rabies testing for animals to be permitted in Canada., call upon the Government of Canada to Permit humane, point of care, antemortem rabies testing for animals.
