The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cited notorious animal exhibitor Hugo Liebel again and again for mistreating Nosey by shackling her with short chains, denying her veterinary care, and failing to handle her safely. Last year, Liebel was ordered to pay $7,500 to settle charges of nearly three dozen animal-welfare violations. According to a USDA veterinarian who inspected Nosey in March, one of Nosey's toenails was so overgrown, it was "curling upward and pulling away from the nail bed," creating a risk of pain or "chronic foot care issues." Foot problems can be fatal in elephants. Liebel also endangered the public by leaving a "large opening" in the enclosure where Nosey was being used for rides, which could've allowed children to enter the elephant ride ring and get hurt.
Nosey needs your help! Please join PETA today in politely urging the Shelby County Fair to cancel Nosey's appearance right away and to pledge never to host her again. Please also call the fair at 317-392-1612 and post on its Facebook page. Tell organizers why you are upset that Nosey is being used for elephant rides.
