These States' Nonsensical Laws Put Our Children at Risk

Flu season is here. If you haven't seen the barrage of flu shot commercials on TV this winter, you are probably living under a rock. Many of the ads tell you to "stop by" to get a shot, suggesting that it is an easy, hassle-free way to stay healthy this winter. But while it may be as simple as 1,2,3 for adults, for parents and their children, getting a flu shot at a pharmacy is sometimes an impossibility.

Last year 143 children in the U.S. died of the flu. Sign to demand that children of all ages be able to get flu vaccines in pharmacies.

Many states (30 in total) have age restrictions that block children under a certain age from receiving vaccines in pharmacies. Three other states have an absolute prohibition on the practice. Children can still get vaccinated at the hospital or a doctor's office, but it isn't easy, especially for parents who have to work. Pharmacies are open extended hours and accept walk-ins right off the streets. The same can't be said of hospitals or medical offices.

Getting children vaccinated against the flu should be a high priority for any state. Not only are children more susceptible to the flu, but due to their less than stellar hygiene habits, they can quickly spread the disease to both unvaccinated children and adults.

For some reason, certain states think children need special consideration for an everyday flu shot. That isn't a conceit that is backed up by science. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't oppose pharmacy-administered flu shots to children.

40% of children in the US are not vaccinated against the flu. So many state policies making it difficult or impossible for children to get vaccinations in pharmacies is no doubt a contributing factor.. This needs to end.

The following 33 states still put barriers to pharmacy-administered flu shots for children :

AR | AZ | CT | FL | GA | HI | ID | IL | IN | IA | KS | KY | LA | ME | MD | MA | MN | MO | MT | NJ | NY | NC | ND | OH | OR | PA | RI | SC | TX | VT | WV | WI | WY

It's time states allow children to be vaccinated in pharmacies unhindered. Please take a moment to sign and if your state is named above, call your state representatives and ask them to support science, not fear.
