Why Is Biden Preventing Rail Workers From Getting Paid Sick Leave?

The ask was simple: Freight rail workers in the U.S. wanted just 7 days of paid sick leave in their next contract. Instead, Biden signed a law forcing these employees to remain on the job or be fired.

The reality for the workers is truly awful: they often work 12 hour days and workers are unable to take time off even in cases of emergency. Even when not on the clock, many are expected to be on call for all or most of the day.

Biden describes himself as the "most pro-labor president in American history." But that seems to be just lip service. Instead, he's leaving a legacy of giving corporations exactly what they want while hanging workers out to dry.

However, there's still time for Biden to turn things around.

If Biden were to sign an executive order guaranteeing at least seven days of paid days off for illness to railroad and other workers, it could help mitigate the situation. Obama did something similar in 2015.
