In the tiny town of Versailles, Kentucky, city council members are considering an ordinance that will protect the town's LGBT members. Specifically, the proposed law would prohibit local employers and landlords from discriminating against applicants on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.
Though central Kentucky is not currently known for being politically progressive or respecting diversity, the Versailles ordinance is part of a movement that is sweeping the state--one small town at a time. Just recently, Midway, Kentucky became the eighth city in the state to implement a law that protects LGBT individuals. Lexington, Frankfort, and Morehead have passed similar anti-bias legislation. Please join with me in asking Versailles to be the latest chapter in this exciting movement!
Dear Versailles City Council:
We the undersigned applaud you for drafting and considering a new ordinance that protects LGBT members of your community from employment and housing discrimination. We wish you to know that we support this measure. You are proving that local governments can make a big difference, and that they can pick up the slack where state and federal governments fail to protect their citizens. The ordinance you are considering will protect LGBT individuals from discrimination in the workplace and make it impossible for landlords to reject housing applications from people who identify as gay or transgender. Other Kentucky cities have adopted this anti-bias framework, and we hope you will proceed to do the same and make history.
