More Than 1,000 Dogs Killed, with 300 Dumped in a Mass Grave in South of India

Over the past month, around 1,000 dogs have been illegally mass killed in the southern Indian state of Telangana. Authorities still haven't released official tallies, but animal lovers and activists in India have been painstakingly tracking the violence in an attempt to prevent further abuses.

The methods used to kill these dogs have varied from village to village. In some locations, witnesses report seeing people poison the animals, or even seeing people hold the dogs down and inject them with chemical substances. In one district, officials reported finding the corpses of around 300 dogs dumped together in a mass grave.

These killings are illegal under Indian law, including the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Yet obviously that hasn't stopped this horrendous wave of violence.

Experts point out that a major factor contributing to these killings is the Indian government's irregular and unsteady efforts to implement spay-and-neuter programs. India's stray dog population is one of the largest in the entire world. An estimated population of tens of millions of dogs roam the streets of India's cities and villages, leading to unsafe situations like dog biting attacks.

Rather than letting civilians take matters into their own hands with these grotesque mass-culling programs, the Indian government must actually implement a consistent program to sterilize stray dogs, and also vaccinate them to prevent the spread of disease.

Sign the petition to demand the government of India utilize humane methods for population control, including safe spay-and-neuter programs! Let's prevent future waves of violence with alternative programs like this.
