Update FMLA to include extended family and significant others

My friend is going through a heartbreaking challenge. Her 69-year-old brother, diagnosed with end-stage Stage 4 cancer, requires her constant care. Unfortunately, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) does not recognize siblings as immediate family members, which denied her the crucial support she so desperately needs. Forced to work over 40 hours a week at Express Scripts while caring for her brother, she has had to exhaust her vacation and sick days, leaving her financially,  emotionally, and physically strained.

This scenario is not isolated. Every day, caregivers face the same struggles due to the outdated limitations of FMLA. Families have evolved beyond the traditional mold—more people live in extended or blended families, and their caregiving responsibilities stretch beyond parents, spouses, and children. The FMLA should reflect this modern understanding of family by extending its coverage to siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and significant others.

Updating FMLA to include extended family members would not just ease the burden on caregivers but also potentially save the government money and reduce healthcare costs. Caregivers taking paid leave can reduce healthcare needs and lower stress levels, benefiting both caregivers and their loved ones. Expanding FMLA would relieve hospitals and healthcare professionals, as family members could assume caregiving duties, lessening the healthcare system's strain and costs.

This change is urgent and necessary. It's time for legislators to recognize the roles that so many dedicated family members and partners play in providing care. This amendment to FMLA will support these unsung heroes who give their time, effort, and love to those who matter most in their lives.

Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to update the Family and Medical Leave Act. Let's make sure no caregiver is excluded from FMLA benefits simply because of outdated definitions of family. Sign today to help caregivers receive the full benefits they deserve.
