HELP SAVE THE WHALES AND REEFS OF SALT CAY

Salt Cay is a small island,  located in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  It is on the migratory path of the Atlantic Humpback Whales.  These whales can be seen breeching and playing with their young just off the island.  The Humpback whale is listed as VULNERABLE in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In addition to the whales, the Spotted Eagle Ray, Sea Turtles, Elk Horn and Stag Horn Corals, surrounding the reef,  are listed on the endangered species list.

A development company has recently announced its'  plans to CONTROL up to 80% of the land mass on this tiny (2.5 square miles) island.  These plans include among other things: an 18 hole golf course and resort, large private estates, new residential areas, condominiums, shops, hotels, and a new MARINA with a proposed 100 foot wide channel to be cut into the middle of the island.

This marina is to be situated in the Historical Salt Salinas. These salt salinas are a designated protected area HA-32 by the Turks and Caicos National Trust (1989).  At one time, Salt Cay was one of the worlds'largest producer of Salt, and these Salinas bear witness to that history.

The proposed entrance to this marina, will cut through the only road going north to south,  potentially damaging and killing the corals, and fish habitat.  The proposed channel will create initial, and potentially on-going, silting over the surrounding reefs,  possibly damaging even more coral and fish habitat.    To add and/or increase boat traffic, will just compound this problem for the whales in this area!

As stewards of this earth, we must give voice to the whales and the ocean.  The knowing (potentially)degradation of the marine animals and reefs, must be stopped.  Please sign the petition below and give voice to your concern regarding the proposed development on the migratory path of the Humpback whales.  Perhaps with our signatures we may be able to affect the futures of the whales and the oceans for generations to come.
