Clovis Unified School District in California is violating state law with its abstinence-only sex education program.
The textbook they use says that students can avoid STDs by doing things such as getting rest and going out in groups -- there is no mention of condoms at all. It also includes offensive information such as comparing a woman that has had sex to a dirty shoe and saying that men can't control themselves sexually.
California law states that public schools' sex education must be free of bias, medically accurate, comprehensive, and suitable for all sexual orientations. By violating the law, they are putting the lives of students in danger. Abstinence-only sex education doesn't change rates of abstinence at all, and states that use this form of education have the highest rates of teenage pregnancies.
Please tell Clovis Unified School District to abandon their abstinence-only sex education for a program that is in compliance with state law!
Dear Clovis Unified School District,
Clovis Unified School District has been using abstinence-only sex education programs that are in violation of state law.
Not only is it in violation of state law -- that says public schools have to implement sexual education that is bias free, medically accurate, comprehensive, and applicable for all sexual orientations -- but abstinence-only education doesn't change abstinence rates according to studies, and leads to higher teen pregnancy rates.
Please abandon this education program for one that does not go against state law.
