Last year, nearly 134,000 American horses were shipped for slaughter in foreign countries. Tragically, the ban to prevent American Horses from being butchered in other countries did not pass in the US Sentate, despite overwhelming public support. The peddlers of horse flesh are now scheming to open America's newest horse slaughter mills.
Horses shipped for slaughter endure heartbreaking conditions. They're crammed into shipping trailers where they aren't fed or given water, sometimes have no room to stand up, and travel in filthy, unsafe conditions. They arrive to the slaughter house hungry, weak, and scared. Worst of all, the horses are slaughtered by violent means. These innocent horses don't even get to die in a humane way. In Mexico, horses are litterally stabbed until they fall down and die a cruel and painful death.
As American citizens and voters, we must push for laws supporting the ban of horse slaughter in the US AND supporting the ban of transport of US horses over our borders for butchering.
