At this point of time when No-Kill, is sweeping all over the USA, and many open admission shelters are acieving 90% and more..50% kill rate and maintaining status-quo is not the way for progressive sheltering..bias towards pit-bull type dogs is regressive and outdated.. commonsense and humane considerations show that they are dogs just like any other dog, and special "dangerous" labels are neither accurate nor required..
At the Carson shelter, Around 7 dogs and 14 cats are killed on an average each day ( with still 72 days more to go at the time of this report ).. pit-bull type of dogs are targeted ( http://www.swaylove.org/carson-shelter-blocks-pit-bulls-from-adoption-events ), and young puppies are killed for paltry reasons with empty cages and rescues waiting..( http://www.swaylove.org/carson-shelter-kills-puppies-for-christmas-while-cages-sit-empty )
The latest incident is the one where a volunteer's hold was not relevant and a beautiful dog called Ruby was killed after passing the temperament test with 'A' grade, given a "glamour-shot" oppurtunity and with rescue in place.. ( http://www.swaylove.org/ )
5 years is a long time for a Shelter Director to show their humane values, compassion, and shelter management skills in action.. Communities have seen No-Kill advocates turn around high kill shelters shelter statistics and go No-Kill in just months..
Please look into the shelter situaion at Carson Shelter and we suggest that things get better so that No Kill become the motto of the Carson Shelter.. with wonderful volunteers and people like Josh Liddy of Swaylove.org working for networking the pets and rooting for this shelter, No Kill could be achieved easily..
Let Carson Shelter rise as a shining No-Kill star among the LA County shelters and set an example for all other Shelters to follow, for the benefit and happiness of shelter-pets and the public.
