Tell the New York Blood Center: Don't abandon your 66 chimpanzees to fate!

After 30 years of using a colony of chimpanzees in Liberia for biomedical research, the New York Blood Center has withdrawn all funding for their care, according to a report in The New York Times.

For now, the Humane Society of the United States is supporting the chimps, and caregivers are volunteering their time for free. However, the Society's Wayne Pacelle says the New York Blood Center is abandoning the 66 chimpanzees and leaving their fate to chance.

A spokeswoman for the New York Blood Center said in the report that the center "never had any obligation for care for the chimps, contractual or otherwise." However, the chimpanzees deserve better after being used for so many years in research.

The New York Blood Center should find a way to look after the chimps by placing them in a sanctuary where they can live out the rest of their lives and raise the revenue through fundraising and donations.
