This morning, April 10th, in San Bernardino, a man named Cedric Anderson walk into an elementary school special education classroom and shot a teacher who was his estranged wife, two students and then himself. The 8-yr-old student he shot, Jonathan Martinez, died and the 9-yr-old student is in the hospital in critical condition.
This is a horrifying and tragic event that should have us all thinking about how to enact logical gun legislation. Anderson had a criminal record, including arrests for domestic violence. Yet, he was clearly able to get a gun easily enough.
But we know the NRA is going to try to use this tragedy to push their craziest, most non sensical legislation through. The NRA and certain Republican Congress members will argue the shooting could have been prevented had there been a "good guy with a gun". But actually, that would have only made matters worse. More people with guns ends in more carnage in traumatic situations like this. Period.
They are making this argument legislatively by trying to repeal the Gun Free Zone Act with a misleadingly named Safe Students Act. Basically, they want to allow guns on school campuses again. The answer is fewer guns, not more!
Don't let the NRA and their croneys in Congress fool you - this piece of legislation makes students less safe, not more!
