8 Million Seniors and People With Disabilities Live in Poverty, But We Can Change That!

The Supplemental Security Income program is an economic program designed to provide income to seniors and people with disabilities who are not able to work. Unfortunately, the way the program is administered now is so complicated that many people who need it can't access it. And for those who can, the amount of money that comes in is below the poverty line. Even worse, people are often penalized for working part time to supplement this income.

Luckily, there is a bill introduced into Congress called the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act of 2021 that would fix this problem. Sign the petition if you think seniors and disabled people don't deserve to live in poverty!

No one should live in poverty, especially not in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Yet a huge portion of our most vulnerable people, senior citizens and people living with disabilities are essentially forced to live with below the poverty line assistance or no assistance at all. This program was founded in 1972, but the numbers just have not been adequately updated since then.

SSI is a last resort and an economic line for many. More and more of the 8 million people who receive SSI benefits are actually homeless at this point. The SSI Restoration Act of 2021 would streamline the process of receiving these benefits as well as lift the amount of money people receive to 100% of the poverty level.
