Stop the Oregon Wolf Killing

October 31st is the spookiest day of the year, but for the wolves of Oregon, Halloween will last the entire month of October. That’s because, the state of Oregon has given the green light to Fish and Wildlife staff, and some livestock owners to kill the endangered gray wolves of Harl Butte.

For 31 days, Fish and Wildlife and other permit holders can kill wolves on public or private land currently occupied by their livestock. Livestock owners have been pushing for permission to fight back against a wolf pack they believe is a threat to their livelihood as they, at times, have taken livestock as prey.

Yet while livestock owners may own hundreds or even thousands of head of cattle or other animals. The Harl Butte pack of wolves number just 9 ( 6 adults and 3 pups). The pack has already been cut down by 30% since August, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) first gave permission for the wolf kill. The current permit is now so broad that it even allows for the killing of the pups, which are hardly a threat to a large cow.

The gray wolf was first pushed the the brink of extinction years ago because farmers shot them upon sight. They refused to accept the fact that this land is not only for man but also for beast. Luckily, after a hard fought battle the wolf is making a comeback. But policies that allow for the culling of these still endangered animals simply to suit the interests of wealthy livestock owners place the wolf’s future on unsolid ground.

It is time farmers and ODFW accept the fact that the gray wolf has as much right to walk this earth as we do. Please sign the petition and call on ODFW to withdraw their permits for the wolf kill and protect these beautiful creatures.
