Australia: say no to ‘ag-gag’ laws to protect farm animals from cruelty

  • al: Georgina B

In laws that mimic the ‘ag-gag’ laws of the US, activists who break into farms to secretly film animal cruelty are being targeted by tough new legislation in Australia.

The introduction of the new laws follows a series of incidents where animal activists trespassed onto piggeries and abattoirs to obtain undercover footage.

The footage the activists obtained exposed horrific treatment, which led to several operations being closed down.

Federal Agriculture Minister, Barnaby Joyce, has recently said that state and federal governments will act jointly to protect farmers from camera-wielding “vigilantes”.

It comes after calls by farmers and the pork industry for harsher penalties for activists who illegally enter farms – even after they exposed cruelty.

Please sign the petition and demand Australia says no to ‘ag-gag’ laws that would enable cruelty to animals.
