Stop the Child Killers of Fraser Island!
The Child killers of Fraser Island claimed their first confirmed kill in 2001, with the gruesome death of 9 year old Clinton Gage. For many, this was a wake up call, and they mended their ways. Unfortunately, ignorance is bliss, and some people get so much bliss they are calling for the government to stop trying to prevent more deaths. The people who feed these wild animals and teach them to stalk children for food are not some backwater hicks. They are right here on care2, signing and promoting a petition to prevent DERM (Department of Environment and Resource Management) from trying to undo some of their damage.

In 2001, 9 year old Clinton Gage was mauled to death by dingoes on Fraser Island. The boy's younger borther was also savagely attacked. In 1994, another young child was mauled on Fraser Island. In September 2008, the Courier Mail reported that a 3 year old girl had been bitten on the back and buttocks - the fifth such incident in 12 months. In April 2009, there were 2 attacks on young children in one week. The next day, a female tourist was attacked. The dog had been involved in at least 9 incicdents.
DERM 'haze' dingoes that have lost their fear of humans by shooting them with slingshots. If they attack people, they are forced to kill the dingo involved. Rather than blaming those ultimately responsible, one lady from Care2 thought it would be better to let people feed dingoes and let dingoes attack young children and everything would be somehow work out fine. She even complained that DERM had removed wild horses, thus destrying 'traditional' management of the Island (horse are not native). She is not alone. The list of stupid ideas know no bounds. I have been told that we should release large quantities of mice (another invasive pest) into the national park to feed the dingoes and that "They should periodically use birth control". On the courier mail article is a suggestion to fence the dingoes into a tiny part of the island and feed them like it's a zoo.
This is not a problem in itself, as these people will not get rid of DERM. But they will continue to feed the dingoes. Even serious fishermen I have visited the Island with feed them. Rather than trying to correct the dingo bahaviour after they have learnt to see people as food, DERM need to make more of an effort to prevent it happening in the first place - by educating people and ultuimately punishing those who feed the dingoes. They should be treated no differently to people who poach plants and animals from national parks, as they do just as much damage, if not more. Ignorance is no excuse.
Please sign this petition and send a message to the government that DERM needs to step up it's effort and target the people responsible rather than trying to correct the problem after the damage has been done. By signing, you are also sending a message to the foolish people who think going into a national park and feeding wild dogs is a good idea.
