Urge the Australian Government to Take Action to Help Save the Rare Forests of Cambodia

The Australian Government is being urged to increase due diligence requirements for imported timber after the discovery of a massive illegal logging operation in South East Asia, according to a report on abc.net.au.

Extensive illegal logging operations began last year in Cambodia, which had been driven by the Laos Government enforcing logging laws.

The report states: "London-based Environmental Investigation Agency estimates 300,000 cubic metres of timber were illegally logged in north-eastern Cambodia in four months. Timber was then smuggled across the border to Vietnam — a big exporter to Australia."

Australian importers' compliance with due diligence requirements is low. Will you join me in urging the Australian Government to legislate to increase due diligence requirements for timber entering Australia from South East Asia to help save the forests of Cambodia.
