SeaWorld & Miami Seaquarium Release Lolita to a Sanctuary (2)

Lolita has been in captivity for over 40 years in the smallest tank of all sea parks in the United States. To make matters worse, her prison does not offer shades so she is subjected to the hot Miami sun all day. She is suffering from UV damage to her eyes and going blind. What will it take for SeaWorld and Miami Seaquarium to do the right thing and either send her to a sanctuary or set her free?

Dear Gentlemen,

I advocate for animal welfare, both foreign and domestic, wild and captive, and defender of the Earth.

I implore to consider retiring “Lolita” and setting her free. She has been a great asset to the organization and park visitors have enjoyed her perform for many years.

However, if you have any compassion for her, you would realize that she is a terribly lonely orca. Just imagine relegated to a small portion of the tank for most of the day, and only being let out to either perform or learn a new routine.

I know that she longs for company. Captivity is harsh especially when you are the only one in the tank. As much as I hate to say it, would you consider getting another orca? Morgan would be a perfect candidate.  Morgan is suffering immensely at the hands of her incompatible tank mates.

Don’t let Lolita spend the rest of her life in captivity, and especially not alone. Another orca would make her life bearable.

Of course, the optimum choice would to set her free. As a matter of fact, set all orcas free. We are judged not by what we say, but what we do.

Sincerely,

Lucio Ortega Jr. MLS

The latest on Lolita happened in August 2016. A Federal Judge in Florida ruled against the lawsuit filed by PETA against SeaWorld. It seems she is stuck there for now. But, we must continue to fight for her, and so many people are. Follow her updates here, just copy and paste to your browser:
