Bring compassion for animals into the future of farming.

74 billion land animals are killed every year for human consumption. When Derbyshire ex beef and dairy farmer Jay Wilde could not face taking his last herd of 73 cows to slaughter, he put their lives before personal profit and had them rehomed at Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Frettenham, Norwich. Jay and his wife Katja are now subjects of the BAFTA award winning film "73 Cows".

Such selflessness should not go unnoticed by the wider public of whom many are unaware of the torment farmers like Jay face every time they have to send their animals to the slaughterhouse. Farmers and slaughtermen are at particularly high risk of suicide.

It was whilst watching BBC Countryfile this evening when the presenters were asking for the public to vote for farmers most deserving of public recognition that I thought of voting for him as my first choice.

Jay is in the process of transforming his farm to grow a variety of fruit vegetables by organic means.

This petition is to demand that the UK government give more financial support to farmers like Jay, who have a change of heart, and can no longer continue to raise animals only to be slaughtered, but are financially trapped. Farmers need significant financial support to transition to plant based agriculture, which is more humane and better for the environment.
