Don't Kill This Tree

Sequoia National Park in California was established in 1890.  It is home to giant Sequoia trees, the tallest living things on earth.  The Giant Sequoia National Monument, adjacent to the park, was established by Pres. Clinton on Earth Day, 2000 under the Antiquities Act of Congress of 1906.

The Bush Administration wanted to allow commercial logging of the Monument, but this was defeated by efforts of The Sierra Club.  The Dept. of Agriculture is now considering logging of smaller trees in the Monument under the guise of preventing fires.  The Sequoias have surprisingly shallow root systems & taking away the smaller trees around them would disturb their roots as well as not allow water to be retained.  Indeed, our national treasure, the giant Sequoias (many of them 1500 years old), would be severely endangered.

We the undersigned ask that the Agriculture Dept. scrap the plan above &,  even better, allow the very qualified National Park Service to be in charge of the Monument.
