Demand the USA and Canada take action to save the Polar Bears

The polar bears of the USA and Canada are in danger of extinction because of climate change.

According to a recent study, the polar bear population of the southern Beaufort Sea, located between the USA and Canada, has fallen from 1500 to 900 in just nine years.

Sea ice is in drastic decline in the Beaufort Sea, with new areas of open water and as a result large waves. Climate change is believed to be the cause.

A lack of sea ice reduces the habitat that polar bears are able to hunt for seals – their main source of food.

The result is that cubs fail to thrive and often die, which is the case with the Beaufort Sea population. Of the 80 cubs born in Alaska from 2004 to 2007, only two cubs have been documented as surviving.

Polar bears located closer to the high Arctic have greater population stability as there is more ice pack and prey availability.

However, as the effects of climate change such as warmer weather conditions increase, these populations may be in danger.
