Change Flagler County high school’s dress code

Flagler County high school’s current dress code is not serving the purpose it’s intended to. Instead of helping create a conducive environment for education we have kids missing valuable educational time to discuss their outfit choices. We have administrators spending time policing outfits instead of being able to focus more time on behaviors and academic issues. In addition the dress code is sexist. Girls are targeted harder by the dress code. For example the length of shorts. Boys rarely, if ever, get dress coded for the length of their shorts but a girl wearing the same shorts would likely be. It’s also damaging to a girls confidence and isn’t body positive. Curvier girls will be targeted more than less curvy girls for wearing the same thing. This doesn’t send a positive message to these girls and tells them they should hide their body behind loose and ill fitting clothes for something they do not have control over. Changing the dress code to allow parents to decide what’s appropriate for their child in no way affects parents who like the dress code in its current form. They can continue to buy the same clothes they do now. I’ve heard the argument that kids can dress how they want when they aren’t at school but that brings up another issue. Not all parents can afford to buy two separate wardrobes for their children. Relaxing the dress code to where hate speech, obscenities, profanities, and nudity (genitals, butts, and nipples are covered) is what’s off limits will put the focus back on studies and behavior and create a better learning environment.
