A new law is being considered by the California state senate that would create additional regulations for nonprofit hospitals and potentially shut out poor patients who otherwise can't afford healthcare. A recent study outlined some of the potential downsides of this bill.
The measure is virtually a carbon copy of 2013’s AB 975, which was solidly defeated in the Assembly by a vote of 28-38. The new version would impose redefinition of community benefit standards at California’s not-for-profit hospitals, limiting consumer access to special health care services through neighborhood programs. In addition, it would impose a one-size-fits-all mandate on the types of community benefit programs carried out by the state’s non-profit hospitals.
Non-profit hospitals work with local stakeholders currently, such as public health departments and senior groups and non-profit agencies, to tailor healthcare to meet their local needs.
This new law would cripple these common sense programs with unnecessary mandates from Sacramento. Tell Governor Brown and California Senate leadership to make sure this bill does not pass!
