Pass the Shark Conservation Act Before It's Too Late!

International trade for shark fins has driven fishermen to catch up to 73 million sharks per year. Fishermen slice off the valuable fins and discard the bodies at sea in a wasteful practice called shark finning. Many shark species are threatened with extinction.

We must end shark finning in U.S. waters, reduce illegal shark catches and promote international shark conservation.

The Shark Conservation Act would ban removal of shark fins at sea and promote international shark conservation. It has passed in the House and now awaits final passage in the Senate -- but the sharks can't wait another Congress.

Tell Senators Burr and Hagan to pass the Shark Conservation Act before it's too late!
Dear Senator [Burr/ Hagan],

Sharks are at risk and cannot wait for the next Congress - please pass the Shark Conservation Act (S.850) before it is too late. Sharks are in trouble: more than half of highly migratory sharks are overexploited or depleted, and up to 73 million sharks are killed each year to support the shark fin trade - mostly for an Asian delicacy, shark fin soup. Too often, fishermen slice off the valuable shark fins and discard the bodies at sea in a wasteful practice called shark finning.

The Shark Conservation Act (S. 850) would ban the removal of shark fins at sea and encourage other countries to pass similar measures that protect these critical apex predators. Sharks cannot wait another Congress - now is the time to pass the Shark Conservation Act.

I urge you to pass the Shark Conservation Act (S.850) before the end of the 111th Congress.
