Don't Send Dirty Coal To India

Energy reform is India's best shot at avoiding power outages like the infamous August blackout that affected over 600 million people. But, India just agreed on a quick fix coal deal that rejects energy innovation and sinks the country deeper into dirty and unsustainable fuel.
India agreed to import nine million tons of coal a year for 25 years from Kentucky and West Virginia. The country is struggling to supply its 1.2 billion people with energy--but coal is not environmentally or logistically sustainable for such a huge population. Instead of focusing on coal generation, India should establish energy reform that will reliably fuel businesses long past a contract date.
Coal is the leading cause of global warming and air filled with toxins such as mercury, sulfur, and cancer-causing arsenic. And, as America moves toward greener energy, it is just shipping these impacts to foreign customers.
Don't ship the coal crisis overseas. Keep America's dirty coal out of India!
Dear President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee,
India's recent coal deal with Kentucky and West Virginia completely undermines the energy innovation India must undergo to economically survive.
Do not postpone energy reform for a convenient and partial fix that destroys the environment and leaves India's population waiting for a reliable and clean energy solution.
The massive power outage that affected 6 million people in India is a symptom of a much larger energy problem than coal, gas, or oil can solve. India must take a serious look at renewable energy sources if its growing population wants reliability, affordability, and sustainability.

Don't stay addicted to dirty coal imports. Invest in reform that will solve the energy crisis--not just postpone it.
Sincerely,
