The Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act was recently reintroduced in the 112th Congress. As an Alzheimer's Association advocate, I respectfully request that you cosponsor the Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act (S. 738/H.R. 1386). Passage of this bipartisan legislation would improve care and outcomes for people with Alzheimer's disease by improving diagnosis, care planning, and medical record documentation. It will increase access to information, care and support for newly diagnosed individuals and their families -- providing essential support for those facing this devastating, debilitating disease.
Most of the estimated 5.4 million Americans with Alzheimer's disease do not have a formal diagnosis or documentation of the disease in their primary medical record. Although Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed correctly up to 90 percent of the time by physicians with specialized training, as many as half of individuals meeting specific diagnostic for dementia never receive a diagnosis -- and some evidence suggests it could be as high as 80 percent. Too many of America's baby boomers will spend their retirement years either with Alzheimer's disease or caring for someone who has it -- we must do all we can to help them. The first step is ensuring that these families receive an accurate diagnosis.
As we work to find a cure for Alzheimer's, we must ensure individuals have access to the available services that can improve their quality of life today. The HOPE for Alzheimer's Act would for the first time provide access to care planning services under Medicare for the individual with Alzheimer's. It would also allow the caregiver to access these vital services on behalf of their loved one living with the disease. These services would provide medical and non-medical options for ongoing treatment, services and supports, such as counseling or discussing medication management options.
As a constituent living in your district and an advocate for the Alzheimer's Association, I urge you to cosponsor the Health Outcomes, Planning and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act (S. 738/H.R. 1386). This devastating disease steals memories, steals independence, steals control and steals time -- before ultimately stealing a life. We must ensure that American families do not face it alone.
