Spread the Truth About American Indian History

October is the month our nation recognizes Columbus Day. But have you ever thought about what we are recognizing? Most of us used to say Christopher Columbus "discovered" America. However, we are learning America was not a vast wilderness waiting for Europeans to arrive. Every part of America was already home to millions of people from thousands of indigenous cultures. Christopher Columbus' arrival did not bring civilization to a savage world, but marked a point of contact between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres that changed the world forever.

The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian exists to correct the education people have been given about Native Americans and help people from all walks of life know the real story.

You can help by joining the Museum in support of a greater understanding of the true history of the Americas. Please sign the pledge!
As the nation recognizes Columbus Day in October, I'm proud to pledge my support for the National Museum of the American Indian and announce my commitment to a more accurate understanding of our shared American story. Knowing and acknowledging our full history is important for all of us who consider ourselves Americans.
