Keep up the support for assisted dying legislation

My name is Margaret John. I am a retired geography teacher and in 2009 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Now -- because of my limited treatment options -- the doctors say that I may only have a year left to live.

When you have cancer you can't control it, it controls you. But what should be within your ability is controlling the timing and manner of your own imminent death.

That is why I support the campaign for dignity in dying in whichever way I can.

The Assisted Dying Bill broke new ground this year but when Parliament was dissolved ahead of the General Election the Bill could not progress further - it ran out of time. Although disappointing, this is not unexpected and our progress in the House of Lords this year has been hugely encouraging.

We won't stop campaigning and now is the time to make the case for assisted dying to be fully debated by the next Parliament.

We must hold our politicians to account -- they are there to represent the views of everyone -- you and I included.
