GILL NETS EQUAL DEATH TRAPS FOR MARINE ANIMALS

N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries has applied for a permit for a gill net flounder fishery and to be allowed to KILL more than 100 sea turtles in this one fishery each year for SIX years!

BACKGROUND:  North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries has applied to the National Marine Fisheries Service for a permit for a gill net flounder fishery and to be allowed to KILL more than 100 sea turtles in this one fishery EACH year for SIX years!

OUR RESPONSE:
We, the undersigned, recognize that the ocean, sounds, and estuaries belong to all of us!  As citizens and stakeholders in our resources we REFUSE to let our waters become KILLING FIELDS for endangered and threatened sea turtles, for birds, fish, other aquatic turtles, and any other species that might encounter the gill net death traps.

Therefore, we strongly protest the proposed issuance by National Marine Fisheries Service of said permit to the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries allowing the killing of more than 100 sea turtles each year for six years in the gill net flounder fishery.  To recoup this loss to the sea turtle populations would take many generations if it were possible to do so.
