Support Rehabilitation and Rebuilding for Victims of War

Mariam and her family fled Syria ten years ago after a bomb attack left her without her left leg and her mother without an eye. She was playing with other children near her grandfather's shop when terror descended from above. Two jets unleashed missiles forcing everyone to scramble for safety.

Mariam ran inside the shop to hide under the counter, but sadly there was no escape. Her mother suffered a life-changing injury, losing her right eye and enduring a skull fracture. 9-year-old Mariam's left leg was torn away, while her right leg suffered severe injuries.

Unconscious, Mariam was taken to the hospital by strangers who rushed to help. There, her leg was amputated to save her life.

Mariam and her family were forced to flee their home due to the ongoing conflict in Syria. They arrived in Jordan seeking medical care and a safe place to live.

Thanks to their determination and resilience, the family has been able to build a better life in Jordan. With better access to medical care, Mariam has been fitted with a prosthetic leg and received support to learn to walk again. Sadly, this is not always the story for many victims of war.

We are calling upon governments to ensure that innocent civilians like Mariam, whose lives have been destroyed by conflict, receive support to rebuild their lives.

Governments should stop using explosive weapons in populated areas and assist victims. They should also prioritise the clearance of explosive remnants of war after a conflict ends.

Let's come together to build a world where civilians don't have to live in fear of bombing.
