Condom “stealthing,” or non-consensually removing a condom during sex, isn’t technically illegal in the United States!

The wide use of the term "stealthing" is a fairly new one, but the action it defines is not -- it's the all too common occurrence when a person wearing a condom removes that protection during intercourse, without their partner's knowledge and/or consent.

In places like Germany and the United Kingdom, stealthing is punishable as a form of sexual violence. It has also be described as a form of rape, sexual assault, or reproductive coercison. It is non-consensual, it is invasive, and it is an attack on the victim's bodily autonomy -- and in all 50 of the United States, there are no laws against it.

California is on the verge of signing a bill into law that would make stealthing a form of sexual battery, meaning victims could finally seek restitution. Join us in demanding that all other 49 states and Washington D.C. do the same!

In a time when reproductive rights are being attacked, it is imperative that stealthing be taken seriously -- how can a state like Texas claim to want to reduce abortions by criminalizing them, while having no laws preventing stealthing, which leaves victims at risk of unwanted pregnancies? Non-consensual condom removal also exposes victims to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). And because stealthing is often done secretly, hence the name, victims may not realize they need to seek medical attention before other serious complications arise.

People use condoms for all sorts of reasons, every single one of them legitimate. Often, a person doesn't want to have intercourse unless their partner agrees to use a condom. Therefore, if that partner non-consensually and covertly removes that protection, the terms of consent have been broken and that intercourse becomes assault.

Stealthing is coercive, invasive, and abhorrent -- and that's why California is writing it into their sexual battery law. Sign the petition and demand that every single U.S. state and Washington DC do the same!
