Lift the ban from healthy, willing prisoners so they can save lives through organ & blood donation

Currently, millions of healthy prisoners are unnecessarily banned from donating organs, blood & other tissue. Over 20 years ago the transplant community blocked them from donating at the surge of the AIDS crisis. Science could not yet adequately prevent the spread of disease at the time.

Since that time, advancements in detection have made it possible to assure the safety of donor organs and blood regardless of risk group. Yet, the transplant policymakers have failed to evolve with these technologies.

More than half of all Americans are prohibited from donating due to pre-existing conditions ranging from infectious disease to obesity. 24 people die daily because the donor pool is too small to provide for those waiting for a healthy organ or bone marrow. This does not have to be the case. Let the millions of healthy prisoners expand the donor pool and begin saving the lives that will be lost without them.
