Urge California Legislators To Give Dog-Fighting Victims A Fighting Chance!

Sadly, dogs seized from convicted dog-fighters under section 599aa of the California Penal Code are automatically declared "vicious" in our state. This means confiscated dogs are often instantly euthanized, and never have the chance to lead the happy, healthy life they deserve.

We know that dog-fighting survivors can and do go on to live wonderful lives. Among the many dogs seized from Michael Vick's property in 2007, most of the rescued dogs went to happy homes, and became therapy dogs, agility champions, and more. All they needed was a fighting chance to find a loving forever home.

Thankfully, while California is one of only eleven states that still have this kind of outdated law, things are changing. Just in the past year, Rhode Island and Wisconsin passed laws updating their Penal Code.

Now, California legislators are trying to do the same thing with AB 1825, which has passed out of the Judiciary Committee and is awaiting a full floor vote.

Victims of dog fighting schemes should be evaluated by professional animal behaviorists and, when possible, sent to loving homes - not immediately euthanized because of outdated stereotypes.

Urge California legislators to protect dogs - not punish them. Pass AB 1825.

Speaker Rendon:

We urge you to pass AB 1825 and protect dogs who were formerly abused in illegal dog fighting operations. If given the chance, most rescued dogs go on to live happy and healthy lives in loving homes.

It's time for California to update its Penal Code to protect dogs who were victims of unspeakable abuse. We urge you to do the right thing and give these amazing animals a fighting chance at a new life.

Sincerely,

Petitioners
